Yeah, I know what you mean. You can try SCAD [Savannah College of Art and Design] in midtown (Atlanta). I’m not sure what their tuition is, but it’s another art school within the city of Atlanta. You can also try Emory University, though it is not a college of art, they do have a pretty good program for the arts and they do offer classes in photography.

So you wanna be a photographer (and get paid)?

Here are your prospects:

Photojournalist: 4-year college degree — battle for entry job at the Podunk Bugle

Wedding: 2+ years as assistant to pro

Portrait: same or 2+ years at Sears

Scenic/landscape: put prints in cafe with price tag — maybe they’ll sell after you’re dead

Freelance — don’t hold your breath

Just walking around taking pictures and selling them — have you gone off your medication?

Now, are you sure you don’t want to take that nice C++ programming course?

I would suggest you join a local Atlanta photography club, plug yourself into the business, meet people, and establish networks of contacts. I can tell you, from personal experience, it is hard for amateur photographers to become professional in Atlanta, unless you want to be an assistant, or shoot for $7.50 an hour at a Target portrait studio, or for Sears. I just had one of my good friends move to Cincinnati to get a job [as a photographer], and she’s got a 4 year degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design. If you’ve got bills to pay, you may want to find yourself a day job, something you can do to maintain your quality of life. I would suggest you go freelance, develop a portfolio, and sell your photos online on a website like istockphoto. That’s a good way to get your pictures ‘visible’, and make some money at the same time. It’s also a way to gauge whether your work is good enough, if your photos are any good, people will buy them.

I would post something on craigslist.com. I use the Atlanta one and I’m always seeing ads looking for or wanting to be a photographer’s assistant. That’s where I would suggest beginning.

Is the agency registered? chances are your kid did not get signed to an agency, because as far as I know, there are NO agencies in Atlanta that deal with children. Check it out for being a scam, like 90% of 'kid agencies' are.
